Nuclear Decommissioning Industry Pension Scheme Consultation
09 December 2005
Today, the NDA has launched a 3 month consultation on the proposed nuclear decommissioning industry wide pension scheme.
This consultation marks a significant step towards achieving the commitments made to the workforce set out in the Energy Act 2004. A key feature of the proposed pension scheme is that staff transferring from existing schemes will be entitled to the same type and value of benefits they currently enjoy.
All staff are being informed directly by our contractors with detailed information made available to them via e-mail and hard copy as appropriate.
Positive meetings have been held with the trade unions and the NDA recognises the special nature of their involvement as the primary representatives of the workforce. To this end a special working group will be established to allow union representatives, including specialist lawyers to input to the design of the industry wide scheme.
Peter Vaughan, NDA Head of Pensions, said:
"The NDA understands just how important pension provision is to employees across the nuclear decommissioning industry. I reiterate our commitment to provide a scheme which meets the requirements of the Energy Act and in particular one that ensures employees who transfer in to the new scheme are provided with benefits no less favourable than those they currently enjoy. We very much welcome comments that will help us to design a high quality scheme."
Following the end of the consultation on 8 March 2006 the NDA will produce a consolidated response to the comments received and then submit the final design of the pension scheme to the DTI. Subject to approval by Government the scheme is expected to be established as a legal entity in June 2006 to be able to take its first members on or after August 2006.
