NDA officials in top level meeting with Irish government

17 November 2005

he Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Chairman, Sir Anthony Cleaver and Chief Executive, Dr Ian Roxburgh, are today meeting with Dick Roche, Irish Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and members of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment and Local Government in Dublin.

The NDA delegation will take the opportunity to reinforce its absolute commitment to safety, security and environmental performance and to outline its approach to accelerated decommissioning and the environmental restoration of the UK civil public sector nuclear legacy.

The meeting will also provide the NDA with an opportunity to thank the Irish Government for their response to the consultation on the NDA’s first Draft Strategy. They will explain how the response will be carefully reviewed and used to inform the development of the final Strategy that will be submitted for UK Government approval at the end of December.

Sir Anthony said:

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to form a better understanding of the issues from the Irish perspective. We are keen to play our part in building a closer relationship with Ireland as a key stakeholder and are pleased that Irish government representatives are members of our newly formed National Stakeholder Group.

Dr Ian Roxburgh said:

“The NDA is committed to being open and transparent, making information freely available wherever possible and engaging with stakeholders. We are always ready to respond to requests for information, or through our contractors to arrange visits to any of our sites. We hope to visit Ireland periodically and make our staff available to attend meetings or deal with issues. We support continuation of the close links that have been established between the Irish and UK regulators.”
